Water HeaterYour water heater might just be the most underappreciated appliance in your house. Have you ever stopped to think about what it does? It provides hot water for a lot more than just your showers. It takes care of hot water for washing your hands, washing dishes, (both by hand and in the dishwasher) and washing your clothes too. A noisy water heater isn’t very uncommon, but if left untreated, it could be time for a new one. If you’re wondering about that popping sound coming from your water heater, keep reading.

Popping Sounds

Popping sounds are actually the most common sounds. Typically it’s an indication that there is an excess of mineral deposits and sediment at the bottom of the water heater. It usually happens in areas with hard water (Florida). This means the water heater needs to be flushed out.

Crackling Sounds

Crackling sounds are typical with gas-powered water heaters. It’s possible that there is condensation on the burner. Yes, it’s an annoying sound, but it shouldn’t be anything to worry about.

Sizzling Sounds

If you hear a sizzling sound coming from your water heater it’s an indication that there’s a leak. The sizzle sound happens when the leaking water drips on the burner. If you notice there is no hot water, or that there is water on the floor around the water heater, then you have a leak and it’s time to call a professional.

Screeching Sounds

Screeching sounds can come from a restriction of the flow of water or possibly a problem that is more serious in nature. While it could just be a valve that needs to be opened a bit, it could be a bigger problem which needs to be addressed quickly. If you hear screeching, you should contact a professional as soon as possible.
